City Kids Child Care
City Kids Child Care occupies a formerly contaminated site near Bathurst and Front Streets, and was designed in conjunction with the City of Toronto Apartments and Transitional Housing (Fort York Transitional Housing) immediately to the west of the site.
A two-storey administration and service zone at the north end of the Childcare houses the entrances, a kitchen, offices, and a wheelchair-accessible elevator; the volume is flanked by two stairs at either end. By consolidating the services in this manner, the south facade is kept free for the children’s principal activity spaces to open directly to outdoor areas, including a large covered play terrace on the second floor.
Inside, shared washroom and change areas form links between activity rooms. The significant planting of trees around the project will provide natural shade on the building and continue the process of greening and rejuvenating the edge of Toronto’s railway lands.
