Marche Building at Evergreen Brick Works

The Marche Building is a market pavilion within the Evergreen Brick Works site, which consists of the adaptive-reuse of the 16 heritage buildings within the Don Valley Brick Works complex. A variety of retail tenants are located in this building who all share Evergreen’s environmental agenda. Reusing the existing steel frame structure and portions of heritage masonry wall, the design of the building centres around a multi-purpose entry foyer that provides access to one large retail suite to the north and one to the south.

The northern retail suite, occupied by Cafe Belong, is glazed on three sides to take advantage of sweeping views of the adjacent Welcome Court and Ruin Garden, and incorporates translucent insulated glass panels to maximize natural daylight penetration deep into the space. The southern retail suite is partially enclosed and accommodates the Evergreen’s Nursery business year round. The existing structure is exposed and expressed throughout, highlighted by complementary window patterns and steel channel reveal frame. The interior finishes are purposely left unfinished and industrial in nature, reflecting the heritage of the site and utilitarian design of the existing buildings. 3rd Uncle Design Inc. were the architects of the retail and tenant fit-outs.
