Vimy Memorial Bridge
This new bridge crossing across the Rideau River World Heritage Site in South Ottawa provides an important new transportation connection between Barrhaven and Riverside South that relieves major congestion on existing roads and bridges. DTAH originally developed site-specific Aesthetic Guidelines for the crossing for the City of Ottawa and Parks Canada. Subsequently they contributed bridge architecture and landscape design services for the new bridge, collaborating with Delcan to develop a signature arch design, and played a leading role in gaining approvals from NCC and Parks Canada.
The 125m span crossing features three open truss arches, maximizing a visual effect of transparency and lightness within the spectacular natural setting. Outer pedestrian walkways are separated from vehicle travel lanes and curved in plan to offer changing view perspectives while crossing. Bridge enhancements include stainless steel cable pedestrian railings, termination elements with integrated identification text, custom cycle height railings, accent lighting and naturalized landscape treatments including native grasses and riverstone.
